Get Healthy – Stay Healthy Community – Obesity statistics

Obesity statistics

As I said in my last blog I would give you the latest NHS stats on the current crisis.

Statistics on Obesity, Physical Activity and Diet – England 2017

  • In 2015, 58% of women and 68% of men were overweight or obese. Obesity prevalence increased from 15% in 1993 to 27% in 2015.
  • In 2015/16, over 1 in 5 children in Reception, and over 1 in 3 children in Year 6 were measured as obese or overweight.
  • In 2015/16 there were 525,000 admissions in NHS hospitals where obesity was recorded as a factor.
  • In 2015/16, there were 6,438 Finished Consultant Episodes (FCE’s) in NHS hospitals with a primary diagnosis of obesity and a main or secondary procedure of bariatric surgery.
  • Over three quarters of bariatric surgery patients were aged between 35 and 54, and over three quarters of patients were female.
  • 26% of adults ate the recommended 5 or more portions of fruit and vegetables a day in 2015. Women (27%) were more likely to do so than men (24%).
  • In 2014, 52% of 15-year olds reported they consumed 5 or more portions of fruit and vegetables a day.
  • In 2015/16, 26% of adults were classified as inactive (fewer than 30 minutes physical activity a week).

Adult obesity – UK is the 7th fattest nation in the world, behind USA, Mexico, Hungary, New Zealand, Australia, Canada.

Cost to NHS of obesity

UK government currently spends about £6 billion a year on the direct medical costs of conditions related to being overweight or obese. That is 5% of the entire budget of the NHS. These costs are expected to rise, by 2030 the estimate is for obesity to cost the NHS between £10 billion and £12 billion.

Obesity leads to type 2 diabetes, leads to heart disease, leads to dementia and mental health issues. I haven’t given you the stats on Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, dementia, mental health as it would be overload at this point. One thing is staggeringly clear.

Houston, we have a problem!

We are in a mess and when scientists are saying (as I have already mentioned in a previous blog) that “babies born today will not live as long as their parents”, I need no further incentive to do my bit to help reverse this needless tide of unhappiness.

The Get Healthy – Stay Healthy community is up and running and on the road. We have meetings planned for Essex, London, Birmingham, Leeds, Norwich. We will send the dates out soon, watch this space.

Have a healthy day

Kind regards

Join the Get Healthy – Stay Healthy community we are up and running.

Our community is up and running, we had our first Get Healthy – Stay Healthy talk in Norwich last week when the topic for discussion was Microbiome and Heart Health. Everyone in the room was also eligible for a free artery age test where we measured brachial and central blood pressures and the arterial stiffness value called Augmentation Index (AI). With these figures we can extrapolate artery and heart age.

Read the following two quotations and just think for a minute or two:

“The doctor of the future, will give no medicine but will interest his patients in

the cause and prevention of disease and the care of the human frame”

Thomas Edison 1847 – 1931

“Let thy food be thy medicine and let thy medicine be thy food”

Hippocrates 460 – 370BC

Thomas Edison was probably one of the greatest inventors of the 19/20th century, (electric light bulb), Hippocrates the father of medicine over 2000 years ago, both were visionaries.

Our ancesters would have lived relatively healthy lives and they knew which herb, berry, tree bark, would cure an ailment, if not we would not have survived as a species.

My point here is that nature and ‘natural’ has been hijacked, side-lined, trashed by big pharma and prescription medication. What was once natural remedies are now treated by prescription medication. It has taken the responsibility for health and wellness (cue sickness) from the individual to the doctor’s surgery. So, it’s no longer about personal responsibility it is about rocking up and getting the antibiotic, or ‘magic pill’ when you get sick.

This is reactive, it is about treating the symptoms of sickness, hence we have the monolith of a NHS that costs over £120 billion every year to treat sickness. As one consultant told me “the NHS is a victim of its own success, we keep people alive longer with multiple complications” There you have it in one sentence and that is exactly what the pharmaceutical companies want, happy days.

As you are all aware the NHS is already on its knees completely overwhelmed with the levels of sickness. And what do people want to do is just throw more money at it. (which we haven’t got because we are broke).

What would Edison and Hippocrates think if they popped back now? Yes, I am sure they would be very impressed with the science, but what about the pandemics of metabolic syndrome and mental health issues? We are 180 degrees opposite to their vision and hence we have the massive explosions of Cardio vascular disease, obesity, diabetes, dementia and mental health issues.

The statistics are horrendous, I will do a blog on just statistics for you in the near future which will shock you.

This is our inspiration, we in the Get Healthy–Stay Healthy community are inspired by these two quotations. They are the driving force we need to take the Get Healthy–Stay Healthy message to the general-public, because whilst many are realising the importance, most are not.

Keep yourself informed with the community. I am posting weekly and we need your support.

Have a great week

Kind regards
